The Foveaux Hotel

“The Foveaux Hotel has been taken over by musician Sherry Shelton, an American Kiwi who bought the hotel in 2013.
It turns out she can claim the title of Captain having skippered her own charter boat in Florida USA.  Sherry’s main string to her bow is the fact she is a concert organist, pianist, and harpist.  She owns Cornerstone Music Enterprises which teaches music, publishes music and is a music production company.  Unsurprisingly, music is now a big part of the hotel.  It includes regular recitals by Sherry and visiting musicians with Devonshire afternoon tea with lashings of cream and jam on fresh baked scones.
I start my meal with scallops (to stay nautical) and then for my main I opt for the lamb shanks on recommendation of Sherry.  A good call as it arrives and with its pile of mash potatoes and rich gravy, it lives up to its reputation.  More gastronomy than gourmet.  This is food for the fighting man and there is plenty of it.  It must be the sea air for I have no problem devouring it before I move on to dessert which is a banoffee cheesecake which nearly a year later still makes my mouth water as I type this.  Need I say more?  The dining room and lounge includes a bar and of course, a grand piano.  The hotel is also set up for weddings and functions.
The original restaurant in the Foveaux Hotel in the early 1980’s was The Captain’s Retreat.  On the walls of the lounge and dining rooms are watercolour painting by Sue Dixon, a Bluff local.
Sherry takes me for a tour of the 9 rooms of the hotel.  There are 5 rooms with ensuites and 4 rooms with share bath facilities.  Rooms with ensuites are $125 per room per night and rooms with share bath facilities are $75 per room per night.  Continental breakfast, free wifi, and offstreet parking are included in the rates.  Foveaux Hotel is only a 2 minute walk to the Stewart Island Ferry
